Frequently Asked Questions
Residential driveways should typically be re-sealed every 2-5 years. The exact time will depend on a number of variables including the condition of your asphalt base, the severity of the winter (freezing and thawing cycles promote asphalt cracking as it shifts), how often you run a snowplow over the winter, and how much debris sits on your asphalt year round. To preserve your asphalt to the best of your abilities, cracks within the asphalt should be monitored yearly and sealed if they opened up.
Commercial lots typically have the same time frame, 2-5 years for re-sealing. However, sealcoating will wear faster in areas of high traffic. American Pavement Sealcoating tackles this problem by giving property managers the option to apply an additional coat to these high traffic areas.
These tire marks are known as tire scuffing. This is typical for asphalt surfaces that have recently been sealed. Asphalt sealers are made to be flexible, so the sealer itself doesn’t crack as the asphalt expands and contracts. Tire scuffing is a sign that your sealer is doing its job. Factors that may make tire scuffing more noticeable include long stretches of hot weather, the age of the pavement and its sealer, vehicle weight, and vehicle operation. If you do see tire scuffs in your sealer, don’t worry. Tire scuffing on a sealcoating project usually takes 1-3 months (curing time for the sealer) to become minimized and completely disappear. To avoid severe tire scuffing during curing time, avoid turning your vehicle wheels while your vehicle is standing still. If you need to turn, make sure your vehicle is moving. Any marks that have appeared in your sealer WILL DISAPPEAR in 1-3 months, once the sealer has fully cured.
